A study from the University of West Attica in 2019 found fabric structure and fiber type to be the most critical factors in the UV protection performance of a fabric.

Synthetic yarns have superior UV performance over natural fibers, such as cotton. Fabrics made of 100% polyester yarns exhibit the highest UPF ratings.

Cotton fabrics provide significantly less UV ray protection in their wet state than in their dry state. Adversely, polyester fabrics have shown that UPF significantly increases with wetting.
